As someone who is naturally anxious and often feels socially awkward, the holidays can bring a unique mix of joy and overwhelm. I find myself overthinking conversations, worrying about what others think, and feeling the weight of maintaining relationships. Yet, in the midst of this, God always sends people into my life who reflect His love—people who fight for our connection and remind me of the realness of Jesus.
This holiday season, as I reflect on the relationships that consistently point me to Jesus, I’m reminded of Matthew 2:10 (ESV):
“When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.”
The wise men’s joy at seeing the star wasn’t just about the star itself—it was about what it represented: the arrival of Jesus, the Savior. This verse encourages us to be excited about anything that leads us closer to Him. Even as I struggle with my own anxieties, I’m learning to rejoice in those reminders, and I want to encourage you to do the same.
Here are three ways we can find joy in the things that point us to Jesus this holiday season:
1. Be Grateful for the Relationships That Reflect His Love
Relationships are hard work, especially when anxiety and overthinking creep in. But they’re also one of the most tangible ways God shows His love for us. Every hug, kind word, or friend who checks in on you is a reminder of Jesus’ care for you.
When I think about the people in my life who persist in loving me, even when I’m awkward or distant, I’m reminded of how Jesus pursues us relentlessly. This holiday season, take time to thank God for the people He has placed in your life. They are a gift pointing you to His love.
2. Let Creation and Traditions Lead You to Worship
Just as the star pointed the wise men to Jesus, so many things around us can point us to Him during the holidays. The beauty of twinkling lights, the warmth of a home filled with laughter, or even the stillness of a winter night can all remind us of God’s glory.
Instead of rushing past these moments, pause to let them lead you into worship. Whether it’s through a favorite Christmas hymn, a quiet prayer, or a moment of reflection, allow the sights and sounds of the season to bring you closer to Jesus.
3. Embrace the Joy of the Gospel Amidst the Chaos
The holidays can feel chaotic—filled with to-do lists, crowded stores, and endless gatherings. It’s easy to lose sight of the real reason for our celebrations. But Matthew 2:10 reminds us that the wise men rejoiced with exceeding great joy because they were on their way to meet Jesus.
In the same way, we can find joy in the Gospel, even when life feels overwhelming. When the busyness threatens to steal your peace, take a step back and remember the good news: Jesus came for you. Let this truth fill your heart with the same excitement and joy the wise men felt.
This holiday season, as we navigate the ups and downs, let’s be intentional about finding joy in the things that point us to Jesus. Whether it’s through relationships, the beauty of the season, or the Gospel itself, we have countless reminders of His love and presence.
For those of us who are anxious or socially awkward, it can feel hard to let these truths sink in. But take heart—just as God sent the star to guide the wise men, He’s sending you reminders of His love and grace every day. Look for them, cherish them, and let them lead you to Jesus.
As you celebrate this season, may you find exceeding great joy in Him.
